ACCESSIBILITY

• Click the accessibility icon for any event to find its accessibility information. 

• Use the search bar to find events with accessibility offerings and filter out the ones that don’t. Use our “Select Accessibility” drop-down menu to select criteria to search by. 

• Note: While you can select multiple accessibility options in combination with other search filters, it will narrow your search to events that include ALL applied criteria. We recommend starting with a broader search, then adding more filters to narrow down results. 

In order to utilise our accessibility widget available for search results, we recommend using Non Visual Desktop Access (NVDA) to best interact with the widget and access the accessibility offerings all in one place. In addition, ArtsBoston is not responsible for the screen reader compatibility of external arts institution’s websites. We will update users as improvements to the calendar are rolled out.

ArtsBoston is committed to providing programs and services that are accessible to all. We recognize our part in the collective responsibility to foster an arts community in Boston that is inclusive of individuals with disabilities, including staff, partners, artists, and members of the public. We are continually improving the resources and accommodations that we offer, to ensure that everyone in our community can participate in arts programming with dignity, comfort, and independence.

The ArtsBoston All Access Calendar comes in direct response to feedback from disability advocates and patrons with disabilities who face barriers to crucial information about arts and culture events. Our updated calendar establishes a vital and groundbreaking new resource for cultural accessibility. We invite you to read more about this project in our press release.

We will continue to make changes to improve the user experience for everyone and apply the relevant accessibility standards. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. Wherever possible, The ArtsBoston Calendar website (bostix.org) will aim to adhere to level AA of the WCAG 2.1 guidelines, which states that sites should be:

• Perceivable – Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive.
• Operable – User interface components and navigation must be operable.
• Understandable – Information and the operation of user interface must be understandable.
• Robust – Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies. Event listings on the ArtsBoston Calendar are uploaded by third-party sources, and ArtsBoston is not responsible for the standard of accessibility met by those sources, beyond what appears on our website.

Ongoing efforts to make the ArtsBoston All Access Calendar and programs more accessible include staff training, community feedback, and strategic partnerships with disability communities. Existing content has been tested and retested by User Experts in partnership with Think Outside the VOX. The website is supported by all web browsers.
