‘A Refigured Tarot: Original Paintings’ by Anthony Apesos

Displayed along the gallery’s main wall, the Major Arcana paintings reconfigure traditional tarot lore through observed human figures—frequently incorporating Apesos’s family members and self-portraits—bridging personal narrative with universal symbolism. The remaining Minor Arcana works complete the series, highlighting Apesos’s mastery of landscape, figurative painting, composition, and color harmony.

Anthony Apesos is Professor Emeritus at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, where he taught for over 30 years. A painter and scholar, he is the author of Anatomy for Artists: A New Approach to Discovering, Learning and Remembering the Body (2007) and The Long Desired Medium: The History of Oil Painting (2024). He has published scholarly works on Titian, Caravaggio, Velázquez, Michelangelo, and William Blake, and recently completed illustrations for Blake’s poem Vala.
