ArtsBoston is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the arts.
The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts seeks to create a vibrant cultural destination, bringing world-class theatre, music and entertainment events to central Massachusetts. In doing so, we will:
Participate fully in the revitalization of downtown Worcester by bringing patrons into the Federal Square area for performing arts events, dining, and shopping.
Restore a historically and architecturally significant venue.
Provide a vital resource for central Massachusetts’ performing arts, cultural and civic organizations and colleges.
Based on extensive research of other successful venues nationwide. The Hanover Theatre estimates its economic impact to the city of Worcester at approximately $40 million annually, in direct and indirect spending, jobs, property values, and taxes. In addition, The Hanover Theatre will enhance the city’s Arts District by creating an exciting performing arts destination for patrons of all ages. The Hanover Theatre will reach a wider audience than any other arts organization in our area-more than 170,000 patrons each year.

Parking spaces adjacent to the Federal Courthouse on Southbridge Street are reserved for vehicles displaying a disability placard or license plate. The police detail stationed in front of the theatre will be happy to assist you. The Federal Plaza Garage also has several spaces reserved for accessibility, so companions are more than welcome to drop-off in front of the theatre and then park in the garage.
Accessible bathrooms are located on each level.
An elevator inside the theatre provides access to lower and upper lobbies for orchestra and lower balcony seating. Please note, there is no elevator to upper balcony seating.
American Sign Language: The Hanover Theatre is pleased to offer ASL interpretation at a select number of performances. ASL interpretation allows deaf and hard of hearing patrons to experience the joys of live theater through the use of ASL interpreters throughout the show. For more information regarding ASL interpretation, contact The Hanover Theatre ticketing office at 877.571.7469.
Assistive Listening Devices: Devices are available at the ticketing office. You will be asked to leave your driver’s license as a deposit when borrowing an assistive listening device. After the performance, return the listening device and retrieve your license at the lobby concierge desk. Assisted listening devices will operate best in the first 12 rows of the orchestra level and in the balcony.
Autism Welcoming: In 2023, THT was certified as an Autism Welcoming Business by Autism Alliance of MetroWest! The Hanover Theatre strives to create a welcoming, inclusive community for all attendees of our shows. Accommodations of support will be provided, including a quiet area for individuals and caretakers that may need a break from the theatre experience. Please talk to our concierge desk for more info. THT also hosts a sensory-friendly performance of A Christmas Carol every other year (i.e. 2023, 2025, 2027.) These performances are intended as a unique theatre experience for patrons who are neurodiverse, have sensory sensitivities and need additional accessibility accommodations.
Sensory Friendly Performances: The Hanover Theatre hosts a sensory-friendly performance of A Christmas Carol on all odd years (i.e. 2021, 2023, 2025, 2027.) This performance is intended for guests who are neurodiverse, have sensory sensitivities and need additional accessibility accommodations. With guidance from The Autism Alliance, The Arc of Opportunity, The Autism in Theatre Initiative and The Seven Hills Foundation, we have softened the most startling moments of the show. House lights are kept on but dimmed for the entirety of the performances and sounds are lower in volume and intensity. Accommodations of support will be provided, including a quiet area for individuals and families that need a break from the experience where staff and volunteers can assist patrons’ needs.
The Hanover Theatre is pleased to offer a limited number of audio described performances. Audio description allows blind and low-vision audience members to experience all of the wonderment and subtle nuances that live theater has to offer. For more information regarding audio description, contact The Hanover Theatre ticketing office at 877.571.7469.
For patrons accompanied by a service animal, we recommend sitting on the orchestra level for the comfort of the animal and customer experience.
Animals smaller than two feet in length may find comfort in the balcony. However, the leg room provided is not as wide as our rows in on the orchestra level. Please notify the box office in advance if you’re attending a show or event with a service animal.
Spaces in the theatre are reserved near the front of the orchestra for patrons who use wheelchairs and for their ambulatory companions. When purchasing tickets, please be sure to mention if any accommodations are required, including low vision, hard of hearing and limited mobility. It is the intent of the theatre to comply with all ADA provisions where practical. Early entry into the house is available for patrons with ADA needs before the general public.
